Teeth Whitening

A smile is often considered to be one of the most powerful gestures that we can make. A small, shy smile to a full-on grin can convey a multitude of messages to those around us. However, in order to feel that we can share this with others, we need to be confident and secure in the appearance of our teeth. With day to day activities such as eating, drinking and habits such as smoking all taking their toll on the color of our teeth, it is little wonder that some of us prefer to do whatever we can to avoid drawing attention to our mouths and smile much less than we should.

Tooth discoloration affects most people during their lifetime. If your teeth are badly discolored or have staining, you may feel self-conscious or embarrassed about their appearance and this could be holding you back from living life to the fullest. Fortunately, there is a way that you can enjoy the whiter, brighter smile that is so desirable in the 21st century. This treatment is professional teeth whitening.

What is professional teeth whitening?

There are countless products available that claim to be able to lighten and brighten the color of our teeth. However, the results that these produce are usually mediocre and short-lived. Professional teeth whitening, which is carried out by a trained and experienced cosmetic dentist, has been proven time and time again to produce the most effective, consistent and long-lasting results of any tooth whitening treatment.

Professional teeth whitening is carried out in the comfort of our offices. Once you are settled into our chair, we use a high-grade bleaching agent that are only available to registered professionals and apply these consistently across your smile. Special molds and covers are used to protect your lips, gums and inside of your mouth from the bleaching agent, which could cause irritation if it comes into contact with the soft tissues inside your mouth. Once the bleach has been consistently applied, a special light is used to activate components within it to break down stains and discoloration and lighten the teeth. During this time, you will be able to relax with a book or listen to music. Once the session is complete, we will remove all traces of the bleach and you will be able to rinse your mouth and go back to your usual activities.

Each tooth whitening treatment plan is tailored to each individual patient. This will consist of a number of short visits to our offices, although the exact number of sessions needed will be determined by how white you wish your teeth to be, the color they are when you start and how well they respond to the treatment. Each session is painless and can usually be completed during a lunch break.

If your teeth are stained from the inside out, such as in the case of damage to the interior nerves that has caused discoloration, the bleaching agent may be placed inside the tooth via a small, drilled hole. This is then covered with a temporary filling.

What causes tooth discoloration and staining?

Most people don’t realize that our teeth naturally darken as we get older. However, there are many other different factors that can contribute to tooth discoloration and staining Some of the most common include:

  • Smoking. Nicotine is the number one biggest contributor to yellowing teeth, not to mention being very bad for your gums and a key cause of gum disease.

  • Eating/drinking products that contain tannins, for example red wine, coffee, carrots and oranges

  • Regular use of antibiotics during adolescence

  • Exposure to high levels of fluoride

  • Damage to the nerves or blood vessels inside the root canal

  • Decay

  • Trauma to the tooth such as a blunt force impact

Why choose professional teeth whitening?

Although there are plenty of products available to buy both over the counter and online that make claims to be able to improve the color of your teeth, there are several reasons why professional whitening is the preferred choice of patients who are hoping to achieve the best possible results.

  • Greater consistency. Professional application of the bleaching agent means that you get greater consistency of the results across your smile.

  • Fewer sessions needed. Since a higher grade of bleaching agent can be used, fewer sessions are normally needed to help patients achieve the desired result.

  • Less irritation and soreness. Professional application and the tools used to protect the soft tissues of your mouth means that patients experience less irritation and soreness associated with the bleaching agent coming into contact with the skin.

  • Choose your desired shade. With professional whitening, you can aim for a specific shade of whiteness and we will help you to discover what is a realistic goal for your treatment.

  • Easier to maintain results. Usually, over-the-counter whitening solutions require ongoing use to maintain your results. However, with care it is possible for patients to enjoy an improvement in the color of their smile for months or years at a time without further treatment required.
