Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a dental specialism that involves addressing the positioning of the teeth and jaws so that any irregularities are corrected. This means that the mouth and jaw functions as it should, and the teeth are more attractive in appearance. Most people think that orthodontic treatment automatically involves wearing braces, but although braces are a common solution, they certainly aren’t the only one that is available.

At Cossich Family Dentistry, we have extensive experience in providing comprehensive orthodontic treatment to satisfied patients in and around Covington, LA.

Why is orthodontic treatment important?

No two people have identical teeth. Our adult teeth, which begin to erupt around the age of 5 or 6, come through progressively and this can cause disparities with their spacing. Some patients end up with crooked or overcrowded teeth that are overlapping, while others will have spaces that form between them. Jaw positioning can also vary between patients, and this can cause teeth to look unsightly and lead to improper positioning when the teeth come together.

Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can address all of these issues and more, improving the way that the teeth come together and their alignment. This is important because:

  • Teeth that are misaligned are more likely to become decayed. This is because they develop crevices and gaps that are extremely hard to clean.

  • Teeth that require orthodontic treatment are more likely to trigger the development of periodontal disease. Increased plaque on hard to reach areas of the teeth can lead to an inflammatory condition known as periodontal disease. This will not only affect the retainability of your teeth, but could lead to infection, tooth loss and jaw bone deterioration.

  • Bite problems can cause issues with the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. This can cause headaches, lockjaw, stiffness, difficulty eating and other unpleasant symptoms.

  • Misaligned teeth and bite problems can lead to uneven wear on the teeth.

Types of orthodontic treatment

There are various types of orthodontic treatment available, each with different advantages and considerations. Your dental team will be able to tell you which they recommend to alleviate your symptoms and put your teeth and jaw into better alignment.

Braces

Most people have heard of and seen patients with orthodontic braces. Glued onto the teeth and comprising of brackets, wires and bands, they are highly visible but also extremely effective at driving teeth into their new and improved position in your mouth. In the past, braces were purely metal, but today it is possible to get them created from acrylic which helps to make them more discreet than before.
