Dental Implants

Nobody wants to live with a gap in their smile. Nevertheless, many people simply cannot get on with using conventional tooth loss solutions or become disillusioned by the numerous concessions and weaknesses associated with them. Fortunately, there is a solution that is considered to be far superior to any other type of tooth replacement option – dental implants.

At Cossich Family Dentistry, we are delighted to be able to offer our dental patients comprehensive, top-quality dental implant services here at our offices in Covington, LA.

What makes dental implants different from other tooth replacement solutions?

It is the completely unique design of dental implants that sets them apart and makes them superior to conventional restorations used to replace missing teeth. The key element of any dental implant-based solution is a titanium post. These narrow pieces of biocompatible metal are inserted into the jaw bone at pre-determined points and will act as an anchor for the visible part of the solution. In the case of single dental implants, this is an individual prosthetic crown. However, implant posts are being increasingly used to support bridges, partial and full dentures too. In these instances, several implant posts are used to attach the device too, usually up to a maximum of eight implant posts for a full arch denture.

Bone is a living tissue. Therefore, once the implant post has been placed, provided it is healthy, the bone in your jaw will regrow around it, healing itself and securing the post in its location at the same time. This process, called osseointegration, is integral to the success of any dental implant procedure. However, it takes several months for the bone to regenerate, and as a result, you will be fitted with temporary prosthetic teeth until osseointegration has occurred.

A connector called an abutment is attached to the part of the implant post that protrudes through the top of the gum tissue, and it is to this that the prosthetic tooth/teeth are securely attached, completing the procedure.

What happens if I have the insufficient healthy bone in my jaw to secure my dental implants?

This is a surprisingly common problem, particularly if you have had missing teeth for a while – such as if you have previously relied upon a denture. When there is no root in the jaw, the bone naturally begins to deteriorate, and this can mean that by the time you seek dental implants, there isn’t enough healthy bone in the jaw to make the solution viable. However, this doesn’t mean that all is lost. It may be possible for you to have bone grafting – when artificial bone or bone is taken from another part of your body, is attached to the existing bone in your jaw, promoting growth and strengthening.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for dental implants?

It is impossible to tell if someone is a good candidate for dental implants just by looking at them and unfortunately, losing one or more teeth doesn’t automatically make it a viable solution for you. We comprehensively assess all of our patients before we give them the green light for a dental implant procedure. This involves looking at their dental health, their medical history, and taking a plethora of different images of their mouth, teeth, and jaw including x-rays and potentially, CT scans. Using the information obtained from your consultation, we will be able to make a recommendation for dental implants or another type of dental restoration.

What are the key benefits of choosing dental implants?

There are numerous advantages to experience when you choose dental implants as your tooth replacement solution. These include the following:

  • Discretion. Dental implants look and act just like regular teeth. They are permanently attached to your jaw and will not slip and move around when you eat, drink, sneeze, laugh and more.

  • Ease of cleaning. Dental implants can be brushed and flossed just like regular teeth and require minimal maintenance. This also helps to ensure that patients have improved oral hygiene and benefit from better dental health.

  • Strengthen your jaw. Tooth loss can cause jawbone deterioration, and this can cause the facial structure to weaken and the jawline and chin to soften and become lax. Dental implants ensure that your facial structure remains strong and healthy.

  • No compromise on what you can eat. Many people with dentures and other tooth-replacement solutions find that they cannot eat some foods which are particularly hard, sticky or chewy because it could cause their restoration to pull out. However, dental implants have been shown to withstand the greatest of chewing and biting forces.

  • Greater confidence in your appearance. By restoring your smile with an attractive, natural-looking restoration, you can have greater confidence in the way that you look.

  • A superb investment in your long-term health and happiness. With the right care at home and by your dental team, dental implants have been shown to last upwards of 25 years, making dental implants a great investment in your confidence and your future oral health.
